Gallantry medal is a most prestigious award for any police officer in the country. It is awarded for displaying conspicuous gallantry, courage and devotion to duty of very high order. The police officer keeps the duty before self in completing the task. This award is rare in itself as the action should match the risk involved on the occasion. The senior controlling officer assessing the task performed by the subordinate recommends to the head of the police department for award of gallantry medal. It is then evaluated by a committee at the headquarters and then recommended to the concerned government for onward submission in the Ministry of Home Affairs under the Central Government, where the cases are critically evaluated and only very deserving persons are recommended to the President of India for the award. Now the award carries a special allowance with a railway free travel pass for two persons of the entitled class to travel anywhere in the country. Earlier the allowance was Rs. 80 only per month but now it has been raised to Rs. 250 per month. Police officers decorated with gallantry medal are no doubt a special class and not only the force but the whole country feels proud of them.
Punjab Police has achieved a feat which has created history not only in this country but in the whole world. Police officers who fought a decade-long terrorism in the state have been suitably decorated with President's Police Medal for Gallantry:-
